Lenape Bay and Breukelen are again sponsoring a Trek-o-Ree event at Camp Alpine this year, scheduled for the weekend of October 15-17. The main events are Saturday all day, but units are strongly encouraged to use this as a camping opportunity and come Friday night through Sunday morning. Registration starts Friday night, 7-9 pm. The fully handbook online here.
There are three main tracks to the program with different hikes and preparation. It is critical that you preregister. Having said that, many of the things that can be done on the hikes require unit volunteers to make it work.
Short/Introductory Hike
The joint Cub/Scout 3-mile hike is an introductory hike for younger scouts. For Scouts BSA, this can qualify for hiking while using the buddy system and there is an opportunity to satisfy some of the navigation requirements, too. Which ones? Read your handbook! Seriously, there are multiple possibilities and scouts and unit leaders can customize some of the activities to teach and test scouts skills.
Short Challenging Hike
The longer Scout 5-mile hike is more appropriate for older scouts with a bit more endurance. This is a qualifying hike for the Hiking Merit Badge. Like the shorter introductory hike, there are multiple possibilities for satisifying other requirements ranging from general navigation skills to plant/animal identification.
Backpacking Workshop
The backpacking workshop has strictly limited space and will include all day activities on Saturday as well as a 3-5 mile hike (TBD) with full packs. The participants will form an ad hoc crew and spend an overnight at one of the lean-to sites Saturday after their hike. In other words, this will be as close to an actual backpacking trip as we can make it as a practice run for the real thing.
Due to COVID-19 constraints, backpacking participants will need to bring their own food, but patrol/crew gear will be provided; you’ll get more information on that once registration opens and you actually register.
More Information
There is also an announcement on our FaceBook page as well as a flyer. We’re waiting for GNYC to get the registration link up and once that’s done, we’ll send out another announcement.
